Podcasting Top Tips – Stage One (Ideation and Theme)

The first step in creating a podcast is to come up with an idea.

This can be on any topic, no matter how nice, but any good quality podcast series has to belong to a genre, carry a theme and, most importantly – tell a story!

So, what’s your big idea?

The next most important step in creating your podcast is breaking its story and content down into a planned structure.

Each podcast and series as a whole will need a beginning, a middle and an end – so you need to think about: “What is the story I want to tell?” and “What is the story that the audience needs to hear?”

Another tip in creating your story is to think about your audience: What message you want to convey to them, WHEN they might be listening and what actions you want them to take.

Ask yourself: WHO will be listening, WHAT do they want to know, and HOW will your podcast engage them? Knowing these first two points will be critical in achieving the third.

Once you identify who you’re talking to and, more importantly, WHY they’re listening, you’ll realise what your content needs to consist of.

Treat your podcast like a direct communication channel between you and your audience. This will allow you to convey your passion and knowledge around the subject and get your listeners as excited as you are about a topic.

A well-crafted podcast will also help your story achieve its purpose, whether that be solving pain points, paving innovation or simply creating discussion and raising the profile of your brand.
