Media Trust x The Podcast Guys: Creativity Works – Inspiring the Next Generation of Audio Storytellers

Earlier in March, The Podcast Guys team spent two days with participants from Creativity Works, a four week industry boot-camp, run by Media Trust. The Podcast Guys are a Creativity Works partner because we believe that the best possible way to give back to the industry is to share our knowledge and passion for authentic storytelling.

What is Creativity Works?

Creativity Works is a free intensive course, run by Media Trust, for young people who maybe haven’t had some of the traditional avenues of entry to media, and are looking to kick start their media careers. From aspiring Movie Directors to aspiring Creative Strategists, Creativity Works is a programme where the participants are given the time and space to tread their own paths.

Earlier in March, The Podcast Guys team spent two days with the Creativity Works participants. The Podcast Guys are a Creativity Works partner because we believe that the best possible way to give back to the industry is to share our knowledge and passion for authentic storytelling.

So where do The Podcast Guys fit into this?

One of the key benefits of the Creativity Works programme is that the participants are given direct access, through the form of workshops and visits, to some of the biggest and most innovative brands in media; including Hearst, WeAreSocial and, of course, The Podcast Guys. The Podcast Guys were delighted to host two full day workshops where the participants were given the opportunity to learn on the job… by producing their own podcast.

We realised quite quickly that we’d be learning as much from the Creativity Works participants as they were from us, if not a little more!

First Generation Podcasters

At The Podcast Guys, we like to think of ourselves as ‘first generation podcasters’. The industry of podcasting simply didn’t exist when most of our team embarked on their media careers so, in many ways, we’ve grown with it. That puts us in a unique position where we hold knowledge on an industry that no previous generation has had access to.

Whilst that all sounds a bit self-congratulatory, it makes it all the more important to share our knowledge and inspire the next generation of podcasters and innovative media professionals. Here’s how we spent our days with the groups from Creativity Works:

The Task

Toby and Roxy, The Podcast Guys Producers for each team went through every role required for a podcast production team before tasking our willing attendees with creating a 10-15 minute podcast episode, including branding, which addressed the question ‘What does Media Trust mean to me?’.

We split the group into two teams and 3, 2, 1… Go!

The Process

Having had The Podcast Guys team each describe what they do in their role, it was now time for the teams to volunteer for their preferred roles within the team. On both days it was such a brilliant mix between people stepping out of their comfort zones and people putting their talent forward confidently. Once we had the teams in place, it was time to start thinking about the audience and ‘the why’ of the podcast, before thinking about how to create it, brainstorming ideas, and then coming up with the episode framework and finally, a script.

We really wanted to show all of the attendees that the framework and ideation phase of the process is where ‘the magic happens’. For every podcast we create at The Podcast Guys, we probably spend most of our time in this stage, throwing a lot of energy, passion and strategic thinking into it.

Responses to the brief

It was important to have a task which had a tangible deliverable at the end. Not only did we want the teams to walk away with something of their own, but we wanted to show the reality of turning an initial brief into a podcast.

Over the two days we worked with four groups, who each created an entirely different style of podcast. We had some free-flowing discussions, emotional reflections, clever sound design, relatable comedy – you name it. The one consistent thread was an unbelievable appreciation for what Media Trust does and the opportunities they open up for everyone who comes through Creativity Works.

The whole Podcast Guys team felt so unbelievably inspired and energised from spending time with such a creative and driven group of young professionals. Spending so much time getting know this next generation of professionals was the perfect reminder reminder of just how  lucky we are to be in this growing industry.
